Horses have been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember! They are some of the most amazing animals that God could have created. They can capture your heart in ways you never expected, they can be some of your best friends, and they can teach you so many things about life. For me, being with Stormy and around the outdoors is one of my many ways of spending time with God. Of course I don't get to see Stormy very often, because he's at my grandparents' place which is 1 hour and 20 minutes away; but when I do have the opportunity, there is nothing more peaceful and rewarding then a trail ride on Stormy. Sometimes when I'm just giving him attention, it's interesting to look into his eyes and wondering what he sees. A horse is often looking at so many different things, and they're constantly alert. They're an animal of flight, so if they here something they look to see what it is in order to decide if they should run or not. They also have incredible hearing. They can sometimes hear things that you may not be able to hear yourself, so when they hear something, even if you don't know what they're looking at or listening to; they do know. Anyways, when I look into Stormy's eyes, I can see my reflection in them, and it's almost like looking in the mirror. The mind of a horse is absolutely incredible. This maybe a little weird, but horses can also have feelings. We may not know what they feel, but their feelings are somewhere in their minds. Like, when my other horse, Cloud died, Stormy went nuts. He was running all around the pasture confused about what was happening and at the same time I could tell that he was sad that he had lost a friend. It's kind of like when we lose someone we love. We're upset and confused and we don't know what to do. But in the end, we know everything's going to be ok and God is going to take care of us.
Throughout my times with Stormy, he has taught me so much about life. That's another amazing thing about horses. They can teach you so much about what is important and they can show you things about yourself that you never knew was inside you.
1) The first thing Stormy has taught me is patience. When I work with Stormy, it sometimes takes a long time to warm him up because I'm hardly ever out at my grandparents' and so he gets lazy and doesn't really want to do anything. I have to really work him before I get on him because I have to let him know who's the boss. If I don't let him know who's boss on the ground, then he'll think he can do whatever he wants when I get on him, and with horses that can be dangerous. If they think they're in control, then they can do stuff to hurt you. Not on purpose, but that's just how horses work. It's like how when parents are raising children, they have to let their children know who's the boss or else the children will think they can do whatever they want. So working with Stormy takes a lot of patience, and it's taught me to have patience in life in general. I often remind my sisters that patience is a virtue to be learned. I don't always finish the sentence I just leave it with patience is a virtue, but it's true. Patience is one of the fruit of the spirit, and when we have patience then we're allowing the Holy Spirit to control us when we feel like getting angry. Of course, we're going to get angry, but it's how we handle that anger that allows the Holy Spirit to work in us.
2) The second thing Stormy has taught me is love. When I work with Stormy I can sometimes get frustrated with him because, as great of a horse as he is, he can be lazy and stubborn sometimes. I guess it's a sign I need to go up there more often, but it's hard working with him, because sometimes it takes a while for him to do what I want him to do. A lot of horse people that I have been around have told me, "A horse has to want to obey you, in order for him to do what you want him to do." Sometimes Stormy doesn't want to obey me, and it takes a while for him to get to that point whenever I'm out there. Anyways, no matter what he does I still love him. And because I love him, I want to take the time to get him to the point of obeying me. It often reminds me of God's love for us. Sometimes we mess up and we sin against God, sometimes we don't want to obey him and do what he wants us to do. And through all of that God still loves us and because he loves us, he takes the time to try and get us back on track no matter how long it takes.
3) The third thing Stormy has taught me is trust. Like I said before, a horse has to want to obey you in order for you to get him to do what you want him to do. Well in order to get the horse there, he has to trust you. Once you've got trust, then the horse will gradually respond to your commands. Trust is probably one of the most important keys with a horse. When you come across a horse that is unpredictable and dangerous, it's not that he's a bad horse, it's the fact that he doesn't trust anyone. And if he doesn't trust anyone then he's scared and doesn't know how to handle that fear. Like I said before, horses are animals of flight and so if they're scared then they're gonna try to run from you. They don't try to hurt you they just want to get out of the situation they're in. Stormy has to trust that what I do with him is not going to hurt him. And he has to trust that I'm not going to guide him into anything that he sees as scary. It's the same thing with me. I have to trust that Stormy's not going to hurt me. Of course he's a horse, and he has a mind of his own and as amazing as he is, I still have to be prepared incase he does something out of the ordinary. But at the same time I have to trust Stormy when he doesn't want to go near something because he senses something that could hurt him and so on. It's kind of like our relationship with God. We have to trust that his will for us is what he knows is best for us. And if God thinks that the situation we're in will hurt us then he'll send something or someone to get us out of that situation.
Anyways, there are many other things Stormy has taught me and those are the three main things. Horses are absolutely incredible animals and God can teach us so much through them. Horses are beautiful, majestic, and can be your best friends if you let them. A human's relationship with a horse is something that is unforgetable. Infact they can teach you about your own relationships that you have with family and friends. And what you learn from a horse, you can often try it on your friends and family. The relationship I had with my other horse Cloud, was inseperable. Infact Cloud taught me just as much as Stormy has and I'm so grateful for both of them!
God bless!
